How To Taste Wine

Wine tasting is simply a process applied to distinguish the taste of fine wines. One must be able to note the differences between different types of wines and for expert tasters, also the differences between the vintages of the same class of wine. Sometimes the tasting is called wine de gustation. The most important part of any tasting is the 'what and How'. The what, refers to what you're looking for, the brand and type. While the how determines origin and fermentation process.

The first thing to do in any wine tasting is to look. Always start by pouring the wine into a clean clear glass, then taking a few minutes to look at the color. You should know that the color for white wine is not white, but actually yellow, green, or brown. On the other hand Red wines are normally a pale red or dark brown color. Red wine taste better with age, while white wine stale with age.

The next step is the smell. A good whiff will give you an impression of what to expect from the wine when you taste it. Please take note of the aroma, is it fresh or foul? And again does it smell like wine. Take time to think about the smell before tasting it.

The first step in tasting is to take a small sip. The small sip allows our mouth to get a quick preview and some expectations. Only after the sip approval do we take in a mouth full and swish. Swishing gives a better full taste of the flavor of the wine. It is normally during swishing, that you discover if the wine is bitter, salty or sweet. Severe cold do affect your taste bud and tasting under the influence of one will make the taste appear different.

The last step is to decide if you want to spit or swallow the wine. Personally, I swallow the wine considering all the efforts. If this is the only wine or one of two or three you will sample at the event, swallowing is definitely an appropriate option. But on the other hand, if you are at a winery and going through 5 or 6 wines, spitting is usually your best option.

Otherwise, every wine is going to start tasting funny because of all the different brands and you might end up drunk as well. Remember when you drink different types of alcohol like mixing vodka and rum, you get drunk faster, same theory applies here.

Tasting will also reveal other pertinent nuances about the wine. You should be able to tell if the flavor is derived from the aging barrel or oak chips. You also can tell about the sweetness or bitterness.

Wine tasters do follow some general guidelines and rules that judge how great a wine is. It is these techniques that can help you bring the most out of your wine, providing you follow them and know how to bring out the taste.

After all, the real test is did you like it. Tasting wine requires some protocols as listed above, but the most important part is for you to enjoy yourself.

Secrets To Becoming A Successful Bartender

A bartender is a person who serves drinks and beverages in bars, taverns and similar places. A bartender is also referred to as a barkeeper, a tapster, a barmaid, a barman or a mixologist. There are many bartenders in Canada.

To become a successful bartender, one has to have the skills and knowledge required by the job. Professional bartenders enjoy rewarding but very demanding careers. Highly trained bartenders are expected to offer high quality work to their customers in different occasions. They are often involved in corporate functions, engagements, weddings, confirmations, holiday parties, private parties and even boat cruises. A good number of licensed bartenders travel with their tools of trade to various venues giving them exposure and experience. This diversity earns them much money. Toronto bartending has several licensed bartenders involved in this kind of service.

So, what makes a good bartender in Ontario? To start with highly trained bartenders should be licensed. Licensed bartenders have freedom of movement and choice. They can move within lawfully allowed areas to offer their services without restrictions. Most of the highly trained bartenders involved in Toronto bartending are licensed bartenders. Having a license has the added advantage of being able to start a personal business and be recognized by bartending agencies and companies. It also adds credibility to the bartenders’ business and personal portfolio.

Another highly trained bartender’s secret in Mississauga is the knowledge of different drinks and their recipes. A good bartender, being also a mixologist is expected to know different kinds and mixtures of beer, milkshakes, softdrinks, soups, cocktails, coffee and wine among others. There are various bartending online and offline resource material and courses that offer knowledge on thousands of drink recipes and mixtures. The Toronto bartending has opened several bartending schools and institutions to offer such courses. The Toronto bartending schools and institutions rank among the best in the world.

The other important aspect on drinks for highly trained bartenders is knowledge of glassware. Some customers prefer taking specific drinks in specific glassware. The Martini drink for instance is usually served in its signature glass. Another useful tip on drinks is to know how to stir one before serving it. The drink’s ingredients are first poured into the mixing glass, slowly stirred in the clockwise direction and then poured on some cold ice inside the glassware. This practice is common in Toronto bartending.

Highly trained bartenders are also expected to be good event managers. The events may range from weddings to birthday parties and the bartender is expected to supervise over wait staff and servers. Most licensed bartenders are managers by virtue of owning the bars they tend in. As managers they also take payments, ensure that there are enough supplies and keep inventory records. Some bars also offer counseling services to the clientele, with the managers being at times called upon to answer various questions on issues like directions and sports. This is the case for several Toronto bartenders. As a manager therefore, the bartender serves as the public image of the bar.

How To Find Affordable Wines That Are Good

Wine is such a wonderful luxury, that it can be and is enjoyed by multitudes of people throughout the world. Most of these people never experience a one hundred-dollar bottle of wine. Yet there are so many different affordable wines on the market that are absolutely wonderful, that you need not break the bank in order to enjoy wine and trying new wines. You just need to know insider tips on finding the best wine at the best price.

Wine Tasting

One way is through wine store or liquor store sponsored wine tastings. Such events tend to generally be very low priced or even free. The free wine tastings tend to offer only a very few selections to try, usually around five or fewer. They often only have one wine of each type. However, many stores will do much bigger tastings, with thirty or more wines to taste and will typically charge between five or ten dollars per person. There are usually tables representing countries, wine regions or even wine producers, with a variety of different wines to sample before moving on to the next table. Usually staffed by “wine specialists”, these employees are armed with information to teach you about the wines you are tasting and give you advice about which selections to make. Quite often these types of wine tastings showcase wines from a variety of price ranges, depending of the income demographics of the area where the store is located.

Wine Bars

Wine bars are another route to go when looking for affordable wines. A general rule of thumb is that if you double the price of your glass of wine that you order in such places, you will have more than paid for a bottle of it. Therefore, if you try something that is $6 or less a glass, then you know that it will definitely be an affordable wine for you to buy for home. More and more wine bars also offer taste prices, as opposed to glass prices, which open up your possibility of testing out a couple of different types before committing to one.

Ratings

Familiarize yourself with the ratings systems for wines. Anything rated above 86 points is usually deemed to be very good. There are several different rating groups, which provide independent ratings and reviews of wines from any and all price ranges. Obviously, you make the final decision, but ratings are very useful if you are looking to buy good wines that are affordable too, without having first tasted them.

Wine Specialists

When you shop for wines, ask to speak with a wine specialist in the store to see if he or she has any recommendations. Often they are a good source of information. Apart from formal wine education, they can often advise you based on comments from other customers and from their knowledge of the volume of specific wines sold. If you happen upon a wine that a store usually “can’t keep on their shelves”, you may want to try it. It may be a much better bet than the bottle next to it that is the same price but covered in dust.

By putting these tips to work and doing a little extra reading on affordable wines too, you should be able to fill your wine shelves with great bargains in no time.

White Wines of the World

If you are an amateur when it comes to wine, you need to be well versed with the different kinds of white wine available in the market. The world of wines is diverse and enticing. Thus, for a beginner, we have made a list of the best white wine that you can lay your hands upon:

Chardonnay

This is America's favourite wine. From the amateur to the connoisseur, everyone loves this dry wine. The grapes that are behind the creation of Chardonnay do not require much maintenance and can be grown in almost all kinds of climates. Since it is a very popular wine that can be easily made and has great sales as well, it comes for around 10$ which is great value for money. You can get your Chardonnay in any tone you like, be it buttery oak, apple, pear, melon or even citrus. This wine tastes excellent with seafood, cream based dishes, pork and poultry.

Pinot Blanc

Another white wine that every wine lover worth his glass swears by is Pinot Blanc. It is native to Alsace in France but it is also grown in Italy, Germany and Hungary. It falls in the category of medium to dry white wines and is available in various tones. The flavour of Pinot Blanc is light and you can get it in tones of citrus, melon, pear or apricot. The undertone can be smoky or mineral, according to the soil on which the grapes are grown. Ideally, this exquisite white wine should be consumed with flavoured meats, lightly flavoured cheeses, seafood and sauces with delicate flavours.

Pinot Grigio

This white wine is an all time Italian favourite. It is carefully crafted from special Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grape. This white wine is light flavoured and has a crisp in itself. Native to the northeast part of Veneto and Friuli, the Pinot Grigio should be drunk early. It is available in melon, pear and tropical fruits flavor and has a smooth overtone. This wine falls on the acidic side and thus tastes best when complemented with light flavoured pastas, seafood or cheese with crackers.

Riesling

The Riesling wine is something that is native to the Rhein and the Mosel rivers in Germany. This wine is very popular in the white wine market and is much favoured by connoisseurs. The original Rieslings are Johannisberg Riesling and White Riesling because they are the only ones prepared by original Riesling grapes. You can get your Riesling any way you prefer – dry or sweet. The dry Rieslings are labelled "tocken" and the sweet variety is known as "Auslese". You can get this white wine in flavours of apple, peach and pear. The undertones are also myriad – from floral to mineral. Riesling wine can be consumed with spicy Asian food, pork, fish, appetizers and desserts.

Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc hails from the Loire Valley of France. However, the grape that is the constituent of this white wine is also grown in Marlborough, New Zealand. It is a dry white wine whose French variety has grand herbal tones while the New Zealand variety has tropical fruit and gooseberry flavours. The best thing about this wine is that it has a refreshing crispness that goes well with many kinds of food. Ideally, you can have your Riesling wine with vegetable dishes, artichoke dip, Thai food, Greek or Caesar salads and sushi.

Types of Wine Glasses

The type of wine glass that you serve your wine in can have a dramatic impact on the flavor and quality of the wine. There are many factors associated with wine glasses that may add or subtract from the wine’s flavor, appearance and quality. There are also some glassware basics that should be considered when choosing glasses.

For a home wine-connoisseur, you may need to take your wine glass selection very seriously. For those individuals that enjoy a variety of different types of wine, you may opt for an all-purpose wine glass. These are tulip shaped and hold approximately 8 to 12 ounces and are appropriate for most types of wine. There are, however, specific types of glasses that you may be interested in purchasing if you enjoy a particular type of wine on a regular basis. You do not necessarily need a special glass for each type of wine, but if you routinely enjoy a particular wine and you have the storage and budget, then you may be interested.

So what are the differences in white and red wine glasses? There are several differences and each affect the bouquet of the wine as well as help to maintain the appropriate temperature of the wine. And of course, white wines are best served out of glasses designed for white wines and red wines are best served out of glasses designed for red wines.

The white wine glass has a narrow mouth, which allows the wine to maintain its chilled temperature. The reduced surface area of the glass does not allow air to permeate the wine as much as it does in a wide mouthed red wine glass. The reduced amount of air means that the air will not warm the wine. The smaller bowl of the glass also means that there is less contact by the heat of the hand, which can also warm the wine.

Chardonnay glasses feature a narrow rim of glass that helps to direct the wine to the middle of the palate. This applies the fruit flavors and acidity. The longer bowl of the glass keeps the wine chilled and captures the aromas of the wine. This type of glass works well for Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis, White Bordeaux and Burgundies, White Pinots and Viognier.

Sangiovese and Riesling glass feature a smaller bowl and even narrower rim. The smaller bowl is due to the fact that these wines are usually consumed in smaller quantities as dessert wines. The smaller and elongated bowl also allows the wine to stay chilled while you are enjoying your dessert. These glasses are also great for wines that are sweet and may be drunk in smaller amounts. This type of glass is also appropriate for Bardolino, Chianti, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and Zinfandel. If you frequently enjoy white wines, you may enjoy an all-purpose glass that is designed for different white wines.

Red wine glasses are usually noted as having a large bowl and wide mouth. These glasses are similar to the Bordeaux and Burgundy wine glass. The Bordeaux wine glass is designed specifically for these red wines. They have a large and round bowl, which allows the wine to breathe, which brings out the different aromas that the wine has to offer. Allowing the red wine to sit in the glass will have a similar effect that decanting has on a wine. These glasses are tall and shoot the wine straight to the back of your mouth where most red wines will react with the back of the palate.

The Burgundy glass is also a good wine glass that is appropriate for reds and full-bodied wines. They have an even larger bowl than the Bordeaux glass and focuses the wine to be absorbed at the tip of your tongue. This allows the drinker to enjoy the sweetness of this wine. This glass is also appropriate for your Pinot Noir wines and is best for gathering the delicate bouquet of your red wine.

Red wine glasses also allow you to drink your red wines at room temperature. The larger bowl is designed to allow the wine to cool after it is exposed to the heat of your hand. If you enjoy red wine on a regular basis, you may be interested in buying a set of these glasses.

When purchasing wine glasses, you will want to look for clean and clear glasses. This will allow you to examine the wine and check its clarity and color. A clean glass is absolutely necessary for enjoying wines and after washing you will want to remove any soap residue that is left on the glass. Thin glasses are also the best, as a rolled rim will cause the wine to dribble into your mouth while a thin glass presents less obstruction between you and the wine. Stems are also necessary, as you do not want to hold the bowl of the glass. The glass should also have a tapered rim, which will keep the wine from spilling when you swirl. It will also help to capture the aroma of the wine.
